Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit Postponed Shortly Following Budapest Talks Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to meet Russian President Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has announced.

Last Thursday Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House said the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was not "necessary".

The White House declined to provide further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Background Context

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with insiders claiming the president had pushed him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on Monday the American president embraced a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the war on the present positions.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, implying that halting hostilities would simply constitute a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the hostilities required resolution, Lavrov stated, using Moscow's terminology for a set of maximalist demands that encompass the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a non-starter for Kyiv and its European partners.

Zelensky commented talks regarding the front line were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the sole subject that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unscheduled call with Trump recently occurred before speculation that the US was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "significant input" in international relations", he remarked.
