The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
His passing follows just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
