The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a powerful symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
In time, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning home,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and earning best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
At Monaco, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
