Zohran Mamdani confirms his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, did not confirm his residency plans immediately after his victory in November.
"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my work," he added.
Campaign Controversy
In his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
But his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria digs.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
